Nurses, backed by the Service Employees International Union, filed four class-action lawsuits against Ascension Health, HCA Inc., Catholic Health East, University of Chicago hospitals, Evanston Northwestern Healthcare and privately held Vanguard Health Systems.
The litigation claims that human resources employees of the hospitals called each other and otherwise communicated to share salary and other compensation data in order to avoid competition with each other for the limited supply of qualified nurses.
Plaintiffs (the nurses) are seeking back pay and legal costs amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. The lawsuits were filed in the federal courts of Albany, New York, San Antonio, Texas, Memphis, Tennessee and Chicago, Illinois.
A statement issued by HCA described the litigation as frivolous.
