Video: Emmy night filled with first-time winners
|
 | It was an Emmy upheaval Sunday night.
Lots of new winners, but a few familiar ones, including Mad Men making it three straight wins as Best Drama.
"The quality of the nominees this season more than any other, has been phenomenal.
So, to be singled out in that group of shows continues to be amazing," said Jon Hamm of Mad Men.
But there was plenty of room for newbies...including rookie sensation "Modern Family" as Best Comedy.
"I think we have an amazing cast, an amazing writing staff and incredible crew, but I think the show has embraced emotion and I think emotion and comedy had sort of gone out of vogue," said Steve Levitan of Modern Family.
Jim Parsons was also part of the first time winner parade for Best Actor in a Comedy for "The Big Bang Theory".
"This feels dreamlike...someone wake me up," said Parsons.
“I’m not funny,” claimed Edie Falco, but Emmy voters thought otherwise. Falco got Best Actress in a Comedy for "Nurse Jackie" to go along with three Drama Emmys for "The Sopranos."
"The women I was up against are hysterically funny and talented comedians. So, yes, I was shocked. I'm not playing coy here. I really am just dumbfounded by the events of the evening," said Falco.
It took five nominations, but Kyra Sedgwick finally broke through and won Best Actress in a Drama for "The Closer."
"You don't think you have you have a chance in hell of winning after five times," said Sedgwick.
But as the Emmys proved Sunday night, times do change. |

Video: Teachers react to APS gubernatorial debate
|
 | were fired up after the debate. we saw a variety of opinions and emotions tonight. but as jeff maher shows us--- one thing all the teachers seem to agree on -- classrooms are too full, and the budget is out of control. it became immediately clear following the debate -- susana martinez and diane denish got a lot of teachers talking. "susana martinez told me tonight that i'm a bureaucrat, that she was going to cut the bureaucracy out of schools, and i'm a
10:07 pm school nurse!" "susana just seemed to be up to date on the topics, she seemed to have a plan, she seemed to be focuses on where money is being spent" some teachers say martinez offended them, by saying teachers were not doing enough to improve test scores "honestly i was a little bit insulted by some of the things that susana martinez said, i've been teaching for 19 years, and put my heart and soul into every classroom, and every group of kids" others say denish did not indicate she had any grand plans to do anything different to improve education in new mexico "she was stuck on the same point, it seemed like she kept repeating herself over and over again after being explained over and over again by martinez that she is not supportive of vouchers" the debate may be creating some heated debate among teachers as to who is the right candidate for governor -- but there is a lot that teachers can all agree on "our classes are oversized, way oversized, our classrooms size compared to teacher ratio is ridiculous"

Video: Rural Hospital Recruitment
|
 | While the unemployed flock to areas like Bismarck, Fargo and Minot... small towns like Bowman and Hettinger have a little harder time recruiting workers. The North Dakota Area Health Education Center is helping fight the health workforce shortages in the state. Tony Scheerz works to find staff for medical facilities throughout 18 counties in southwestern North Dakota. Scheerz says while new technology has improved the quality of care patients receive, it's still difficult to find medical workers to serve our rural areas. He says while registered nurse positions fill quickly, finding specialists and family practitioners isn't so easy. "I think the biggest challenge of getting a doctor in a rural community is there is a misconception that there is nothing for them to do. That the social environment isn't there. But when you look at the rural communities in North Dakota, there are alot of things, hunting, fishing, there is excellent schools. I think there is all kinds of opportunities for the kids to participate in sports and things like that. So I think there are alot of draws and I think we just need to emphasize those in our rural communities." Scheerz says AHEC plans to open another office in the northwest part of the state after the first of the year. |

Video: Tips to lose your sweet tooth and shed pounds
|
 | As a cardiac care nurse Lesa Coleman knows the importance of a healthy diet, but it was her son who made her realize she needed to eat better and lose weight.
"We were going out for breakfast at IHOP. We were gonna have the pancakes, everything. He ordered a spinach and grilled chicken salad, and I said, 'Oh, you eat like that?' And he said, 'Yeah, of course. What else?'" she explains.
Coleman decided to cut refined sugar out of her diet.
She has lost 50 pounds in the process. Her husband, 40.
"We hardly eat out. We prefer to eat our own food. My husband is a good cook," Coleman says.
Cutting out sugar may seem like a difficult undertaking, but there's a simple way to get started.
"It's not that hard if you go with the nothing sweet, nothing white and stick to that," says Dr. Michael Rothkopf. "You are going to eliminate 90 percent of the foods that are basically high glycemic foods."
Instead, look for foods which have a low glycemic index.
Those foods include fruit, vegetables, foods high in protein, fish, chicken and lean meats.
Pass on the bread, baked potatoes, and starches.
Dr. Rothkopf recommends paying attention to what you eat instead of counting calories.
"Let's get nutritious food in there that, number one is gonna satisfy our appetite and number two is gonna help us burn off some of this fat," he says. |

Video: Neighbors say horses malnourished
|
 | they're not exactly starving--- but they are certainly under- nourished. stuart dyson checked out neighbors' complaints.... and he checks in now with what he found. " we've seen worse cases - and most of the time those horses die - the ones we found today have a chance." when we got there they were basically eating dirt - not a blade of grass in their corral - no hay - they did have water - look at the ribs sticking out on the mare - hipbones too - the foal wants to nurse but the mama won't have much milk if any. the property is for sale - caretaker says it's involved in legal action. eight bedroom house - huge. dig the boat - 18 footer. veterinary clinic manager holly salzman stops by and confronts the caretaker. " they're fed every day - they're watered every day - i don't want to argue with you. obviously not enough. please don't argue with me any more - thank you for coming by. i will continue to come by." " if they're kept in this condition i guarantee that in a month - ifhis mare is in this condition she's not gonna make it - neither is that baby - cos that baby relies on that mare for nourishment." we found some moldy hay beside the fence - threw some over the fence. - that's what they're eating. " holly - the vet clinic manager - reported the case to the state livestock board - caretaker says he'll get fresh hay and make sure the horses get more to eat - |

Video: Kaseman Hospital considers removing safety glass
|
 | A proposed makeover for an Albuquerque hospital’s emergency area has some employees worried about safety.
After Eyewitness News 4 received an anonymous email from a nurse saying the construction plans at Presbyterian Kaseman include taking down some security glass that’s currently in place.
Although hospital officials wouldn’t let the media inside, according to the letter Kaseman’s emergency department looks something like a bank with heavy, safety glass windows. The New Mexico Nurses Association says protection like that is in place for good reason.
“There has been an increase in assaults on nurses for the past 15 or 20 years. And it has gotten to the point where nurses are afraid and hospitals are concerned,” Carrie Roberts with NMNA said.
We’ve learned Kaseman may remodel the area and remove the safety glass. While the anonymous letter claims the motivation is for a more patient-friendly environment, Kaseman says no decision has been made yet.
A statement was released by the hospital on Wednesday that said: “We are currently looking to remodel the emergency department at Presbyterian Kaseman Hospital to help ease patients through emergency care. Design is a major element of this project.”
The worried nurse who wrote to us says protection is needed, referring to July’s Emcore shooting and also a man named John Hyde. He was a Kaseman psychiatric patient before going on an Albuquerque shooting spree five years ago. |

Video: New Air Ambulance Service
|
 | A Rapid City company is opening a new air ambulance service in Williston. Medical Air Rescue Company plans to locate one of its King Air, twin-engine aircraft at the Williston Airport to provide rapid transportation for patients in need of medical care at larger centers such as Bismarck or Minneapolis or Denver. Garry Bauer of Medical Air Rescue says the service could also be summoned to bring patients from an area small town clinic or hospital to Williston. Bauer says people in the Williston medical community reached out to his firm to begin service. (Garry Bauer, Medical Air Rescue) "One of the local doctors here assessed the need for air transport and contacted our company. We came in and chatted with the local people and there's definitely a need - a huge need to get people quickly to advanced care and that's what our company provides. So it's a pretty huge opportunity for our company to expand out to this area." Bauer says the Rapid City company has six aircraft - one of which will now be located in Williston. Three pilots and one paramedic are moving to Williston to be full-time staff for Medical Air Rescue. In addition, Bauer says Williston-area paramedics and registered nurses have been hired to be on call to staff any air ambulance flights that are needed. |
