Video: School calls parent, not 911, for child’s broken leg
A special needs fifth-grader in Belen breaks his leg at recess but no ambulance is called, leaving the boy's mother furious that he wasn’t taken to a hospital immediately. 11-year-old Isaiah Vaughan will be on crutches whenever his mother decides to send him back to La Promesa Elementary School in Belen. On Friday, Isaiah said a school bully hurt him during a recess soccer game. Isaiah, who is diagnosed with ADHD, was brought to the school nurse's office. He says school officials called his mom instead of the paramedics. When Isaiah’s mother, Julie Vaughan, picked up her injured son from school she took him to the hospital where a doctor said the boy's leg was broken. She thinks the principal should have called in an ambulance. "What if he got hurt worse? They didn't know what really happened," said Vaughan. The superintendent of Belen’s consolidated schools did not want to talk on camera, but did send us a copy of the school district's policy on emergency medical care which states: "911 will be called immediately for such conditions as profuse bleeding, cessation or obstruction of breathing, deep shock, head injury with deep unconsciousness, electric shock, heart attack, or any other life threatening condition." School officials tell us one of the reasons the ambulance is not called for non-life threatening injuries is because the school is in such a remote location, the parents can typically get there faster than an ambulance. Vaughan says she has no transportation.

Video: Business Beat - March 4
An assisted living facility in Minot is growing to handle those who may need a little more than traditional assisted living services. Edgewood Vista has recently started Edgewood Plus. Currently four people are taking advantage of the new service and there is a little room for expansion. Denise Christianson is the director of nurses at Edgewood Plus. She says the advanced care unit has been well recieved thus far. (Denise Christianson, RN - Director of Nurses) "We have so many residents who live with us and have for years and this becomes home and then it gets to the point we can't provide for them anymore. They just require a bit more so with this we can just provide the next step." Edgewood Plus has been up and running for about one month. The goal is seven residents now...with expansion possible in the future. A business that called Plaza home since 1993 has moved to Minot. Edwards Gravel and Construction Company has been in Minot now for about two months. Robbie Edwards operates the business doing lots of dirt work...and oil field work. He says in the summertime he'll have about 13 full-time employees. Edwards is located just across Broadway from Denny's. Stephanie Rynestad has moved 'A Touch of Heaven' to a new location at 1809 South Broadway. Located downstairs, this longtime massage therapist is thrilled to have her own location now after sharing one with a friend and also thrilled to be offering new services... (Stephanie Rynestad, LMT - 'A Touch of Heaven') "Now with my own space I can do hot stone and will continue to do pregnancy massage. I can also do body scrubs and mud wraps as well." Contact her at 340-9365. Finally Companions for Children is expanding its services with a new program geared at getting kids healthy. Billy Seright tells us it is called wellness mentoring...and it may be the perfect opportunity for you to be a great influence on a child in the area... (Billy Seright - Companions for Children) "We are looking for people who are interested in maybe a shorter engagement with mentoring and who knows...maybe they will want to stick with it and jump in for the long term." The program only runs eight weeks. Call 838-5784 if you are interested. As always, I appreciate your business knowledge. Know a business that should be here? Contact me at polson@kxmcnews.com or 420-5479. With Business Beat, Perry Olson, KX News.

Video: Bus Crash Injures Eight
Eight middle schoolers were hurt when the school bus they were in hit a cow and went into a ditch near Hazen Monday night. The most seriously injured student required several stitches on his head but all eight kids were released from a Hazen medical center soon after the crash. Minot Schools Transportation Director Barry Brooks says the accident happened as a bus with twenty students, two coaches, and the driver, was returning from a Basketball game at Beulah Monday night. Brooks says the bus driver did a great job keeping the bus from overturning. And everyone involved, including the kids, responded well. (Barry Brooks, Minot Schools Transportation Director) "Two black cows popped out, he hit one, and forced into the ditch. Right behind was a car with parents on board. They missed the second cow and fortunately one of the parents was a nurse. She helped administer first aid until the first responders came. The first responders were awesome, just totally awesome." Brooks says this is only the second bus accident where a passenger was injured in his 13 years in charge of transportation. The amount of damage to the bus is still being determined.
