Moderate Alcohol May Reduce Hip Fractures Says AJM Study Print
Nursing News
A recent study published in The American Journal of Medicine claims that individuals who consumed 1 drink/day (0.5 to 1.0 drinks/day), so-called moderate drinkers, have a decreased risk of osteoporotic hip fracture when compared with non and heavy alcohol drinkers.

There are some data which also indicate that moderate drinking may increase bone density, but it is not known how much alcohol must be consumed before the benefits can be seen. A major limitation of the study is that the data on alcohol consumption were self reported via survey (individuals who drink alcohol may under report their consumption).

Although numerous benefits, including diminished mortality, have been credited to moderate alcohol consumption, clearly non drinkers ought to also thrive in most clinical scenarios. Once again, good, clear and honest communication with patients about alcohol use, the potential limited benefits and very real risks of abuse, should be encouraged.
