January 2, 2009 2 out of 3 found this review helpful I have done a ton of reading and research on addictions and the emotional highs and lows that go along with success and failure of the addiction. I also know from personal experience the mental turmoil of the epic battle between you and the addiction. The screams of Wisdom pulling you in one direction and the soft enticing whisper of the drug of choice pulling you in the other. All the books and groups I have been to have all dealt with how to "avoid" the addiction or how to fight the temptation. None of them actually deal with the root issue at hand; why are you feeling the need to substitute something to give us the temporary high we are looking for. I think this book is a great road map of how to get to the root of the issue. Chris & Pax Prentiss did an excellent job of explaining how to get to the root of the addiction. Here's a few things I learned from these guys (most of this is direct quotes from the book). Addiction, any addiction, is craving for an emotion. To become permanently sober we must start the journey/quest to find out why we are seeking the emotional high. I also learned that the 1st step in victory is your emotional state. Your emotional state is one of the most important aspects in curing your dependency. It could be the most important. I was also impressed that most addicts only stay 30 days at Passages. Passages is Chris & Pax's rehab facility. I thought to effectively cure an addiction it would take months and months of daily work and discipline to be set free from an addiction. I think this speaks volumes of their effectiveness in getting to the root of the problem. In conclusion I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone struggling with addiction. If you know someone who is struggling this is a must read and needs to be purchased. I can't think of a better gift to give than the gift of freedom. Well done guys!! There were many, many enlightening facts in this book. As Chris points out, we have been treating people for years because they were "scratching". Hopefully, we can begin to figure out what is making them itch in the first place! I have highlighted so many sections in this book, and I've been sharing them with my family and friends. who cares why an addict drinks or takes drugs? November 30, 2008 1 out of 14 found this review helpful I'm watching CNN Sunday morning, and every commercial seems to be for this book, so I read up on it. It really doesn't matter why a person started drinking to excess - what matters is: don't take the first drink. Speculating about underlying causes is akin to having a poison arrow in your side that needs to be removed, and you are wasting time trying to decide who shot the arrow, who made the shaft, feathers, what kind of bow it was shot from etc. Meanwhile the poison is killing you. November 26, 2008 6 out of 8 found this review helpful You know, I've never really swallowed the idea that alcoholism is a 'dis-ease' and that someone struggling with addiction is 'powerless' over anything...my husband has been battling addiction for 10 years and I've always believed that there was an underlying cause that made him want to 'medicate' himself but had never found any major supporter of the idea until this book was released. It's like an AH-HA moment for those of us that believe in our own power. I've fought for years with my husband's fellow 'recovering addicts'; some of which have been sober for 15 years, that it's a choice, not an illness. When someone offers you that drug, bottle of beer, or whatever tool you've used, you have the choice to say 'yes, I'll take it' or 'no, thank you.' To me it's always been that simple...so you are NOT powerless...you HAVE the power to say yes or no. This book opened up the realm of self power to let me (and my husband) take back the responsibility for his actions...which, in itself, has begun the healing process; he's no longer a 'victim' of a dis-ease. We can't afford a place like Passages, nor can we afford all of the healers that they recommend; however, the mind is the MOST powerful of all healers and we have the power to heal ourselves once our plane of thinking has been opened. WE WILL SUCCEED! I highly recommend this book to ANYONE that has been to AA but does not feel confident with its "give it to God" concept of lack of self-control; for you are the ones that 'know' deep down inside that there's more to this than a diagnosis of a dis-ease. Chris Prentiss along with his Son Pax have the guts to stand up and speak out about the miserable failures of the old paradigm of alcohol and drug treatment programs. Their program is a bold step forward into the treatment of addictions and self sabbotaging behavior. There will be the old detractors who will scream from the mountain tops that this book and it's ideas are heresy, but that's because the old 12 Step model of addiction being a disease has now been proven false and people are getting cured and free from the recovery cults.
