5 out of 5 stars One of the most enlightening books on health ever published   October 1, 2007

This book is sure to be hotly controversial! It debunks the whole hypothesis of the low fat, cholesterol causes heart disease dogma. Author, Gary Taubes follows the scientific evidence and how some of the medical researches (primarily Ancel Keys) supporting the low fat hypothesis were terribly wrong and guilty of favoring results that supported their low fat hypothesis and ignoring conflicting results. The science supporting the low fat theory is flimsy at best. You cannot ignore the credentials of Gary Taubes. He is a correspondent for Science Magazine and the only science writer that has won 3 awards given by the National Association of Science Writers. He has spent 7 years of research in order to write this book. He uncovers the truth in a thoughtful and objective narrative The evidence points the finger at overly processed white flour, sugar, high frutose corn syrup (found in most processed packaged products) and the high carbohydrate comsumption as being at the root of many of the diseases of modern civilization: obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, ADD and more. Of course, this is not the first book to bring this message to the public. Others include "Life Without Bread" based on 40 years of clinical experience by a German doctor, "Eat Fat, Loose Fat" by Sally Fallon, the many diet books such as Protein Power, Atkins, Sugas Busters, South Beach, etc. But this is the first book to reseach the evidence in such amazing detail. My personal experience is that he is "spot on"! Eat real foods that have been our diet for thousands of years. One more thing, this book cannot be skimmed. If you attempt to do that you will miss many important details!

5 out of 5 stars excellent information   October 1, 2007

Gary Taubes book is full of very thought provoking ideas and interesting historical accounts. If what he implies is true, many people will respond with hostility to what he says, however, I would point out that this author really seems to have done his homework and those who are criticizing are merely regurgitating things they have been told, not things they have studied. My own experience with food compells me to agree with this author. Having read the boook, I feel I better understand why consuming few refined carbohydrates has truly helped me.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings   October 1, 2007

I found this book fascinating but hard to read, as it mostly summarizes and analyzes hundreds and hundreds of scientific studies.

I did wonder if maybe he is right about sugar and flour being particularly bad for you, which Ornish and Pollan also say, so after reading it I decided to stop eating them and see what happens to my weight and glucose level. It seems to me that as a result I'm less hungry, eat less, and am losing weight without trying to, but it's only been a couple of weeks: too soon to tell if that will last.

He seems to believe that eating lots of saturated fat is good for you, but I have a hard time being convinced of that because lots of traditional cultures that ate complex carbohydrates but very little animal protein or fat seemed to be relatively free of heart disease and diabetes, for instance Asian cultures before they started adopting a more western diet.

He has got me thinking a little more critically about scientific studies, and how it's easy to think an association is a cause.

I notice that most of the reviews here were written by food fundamentalists, either low carb or low fat fundamentalists that are positive they are right about everything, and are mad at people who have a different view. This makes it hard to have a good discussion about possible pros and cons of different approaches.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best science books I've read in a long time   September 30, 2007

Really hammers in how young medical sciences are. I found his description reminiscent of the physical sciences during the 1400-1500's. When I was reading it it felt as though he was getting closer to the truth then anything else I had read.

Some portion of the population is more sensitive to insulin than others in certain spots seemed to be an implicit conclusion. There's no reason calories in = calories out couldn't be true for some people according to the book. Others go into starvation while still being obese with enough insulin.

It applies scientific rigor much more than anything I've seen. Its not perfect but in terms of nutrition books way better than anything.

5 out of 5 stars Challenging the conventional wisdom   September 30, 2007
34 out of 37 found this review helpful

With obesity, diabetes, and other "diseases of civilization" spreading like wildfire through populations around the world despite decades of encouragement from health authorities to eat less, exercise more, and restrict dietary fat, the conventional wisdom on nutrition and health is obviously in desperate need of challenging. This book, the product of years of exhaustive research, can provide that challenge, but only if you are willing to set aside your preconceptions and examine the actual evidence for and against "what everyone knows to be true."
