You come across Bob Marckini's book, "You Can Beat Prostate Cancer." You feel as though there is life after hearing "that word." This is the most insightful, informative and unbiased book you will ever read on this subject. A must on every man's night table

A very valuable resource on prostate cancer treatment options June 3, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I want to add my thanks to Bob Marckini for writing an informative and very helpful book on prostate cancer treatment. I discovered Bob and his book by accident. When my daughter learned that I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, she knew that the father of a good friend of hers had just completed cancer treatments in California. She said that her friend's father would be happy to talk to me and, knowing that he was an orthopedic surgeon in Houston (a city known for a world-famous cancer treatment center), I called him to see why he would travel to California for treatment. As it turns out, he had recently returned not from surgery but from proton therapy at Loma Linda--something which initially surprised me. Prior to our conversation, I had done significant research on treatment options (including HIFU treatment in Canada or Germany) and consulted with several doctors. None of this research or consultation brought proton therapy to my attention. The doctor in Houston referred me to Bob Marckini's book "You Can Beat Prostate Cancer and You Don't Need Surgery to Do It" which has been a great resource on several levels. Regardless of what option you choose, if you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer, you should read this book prior to making your final decision on treatment. It has been a real help to me.
Don't consider any treatment until you've read it May 31, 2008 The phrase " a must read" was never so apt as when applied to Mr. Marckini's book and anyone confronted with the dreaded diagnosis of prostate cancer. The author covers this weighty topic in a most readable fashion, relating his personal and family experience and the steps he took to deal with it. The author reviews all the treatment options available to him and the reasoning behind his decision making. Being a PC survivor he writes with considerable authority. His experience with Proton Therapy is a compelling read. At the time it was a relatively new method of treatment, but one which has gained a considerable following, with thousands of satisfied patients. Mr. Marckini has done considerable service in writing his story, providing those newly diagnosed with PC with a real sense of hope and confidence in the future. Don't consider any treatment until you've read it.
You are not alone May 23, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book should be a must read for every man. When and if the day comes when you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the worry, fear and confusion will feel overwhelming. This book is the next best thing to speaking with someone who has been there.
Ladies, if you love your man, buy it for them. Men, if you love your family buy it for them.
The insight, information, hope and humor will help you deal with this disease in the best possible way.

Confusion and Protate Cancer Treatments May 20, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When you get the dreaded "C Word" diagnosis the second C Word usually follows shortly -- "confusion." In my case I was diagnosed with prostate cancer by my urologist, and because most urologists are surgeons, he recommended the supposed "gold standard" treatment -- surgery. As luck would have it, he was about to move to another practice in another state, so I had time to do some research on alternative treatments before I could get on the schedule for a new urologist. Because of my engineering background, I began to matrix all available treatment options I could find and all of their associated risks (regular photon radiation with all of its variants, radioactive seed implantation, cryotherapy, "watchful waiting", and various surgery alternatives. The exercise was confusing at best, and terrifying at worst. Most alternatives gave very good descriptions of the technique, but were vague on the downside risks associated with each option -- especially the risks of impotence and incontinence post-treatment. Luckily, my wife, an ex trauma intensive care nurse, led me to a good cross section of WEB addresses that explained in detail the disease, the technical aspects of the treatment options, and an extensive listing of current books on prostate cancer treatment options. Among that list was Bob Marckini's book "You Can Beat Prostate Cancer", which turned out to be a godsend. He already had a matrix on page 91 of his book of the treatment options (now a few years old, but still valid) and the associated risks associated with each. Exactly what my engineering mind could relate to! Because of his book, I called Loma Linda University Medical Center and was referred to a very capable staff at their Proton Center. They answered all of my extensive questions, mailed me an informative packet and CD on the hospital and the proton treatment option, and scheduled me for a consult. Every individual must make their own decisions about cancer treatment options that fit their individual circumstances, but Bob Marckini's book makes the process straightforward. In my case, I chose to have the proton treatment primarily because of the easily understood proton beam therapy risks -- few, if any, downside risks of incontinence or impotence. Bottom Line: Access Bob Marckini's WEB site www.protonbob.com, buy his book, read the book, and call Loma Linda Medical Center (909)558-4000 and ask for the Proton Center. You and you wife will be glad you did!
