Whether readers find it helpful will depend partially on their sense of humor?Dr. Phil titles one chapter "Bag 'em, Tag 'em and Take 'em Home", a pretty fair example of the rest of the jokes and the general attitude of the book's advice. Marriage is what it's about, and the dating game has specific rules that, once learned, any "player" can use to succeed. While not quite as strict as the infamous The Rules, this is a manual that treats marriage as a prize, winnable only by those who regard old-fashioned rules as the only possible set.

An early exercise suggests that women make detailed lists of the qualities they're looking for in a mate; five broad categories cover everything from social skills to physical appearance. Once a clear picture is formed of the ideal partner, it all boils down to marketing. Dr. Phil discusses conversation skills such as developing "icebreaker" questions and even digs up some of the old-school techniques that suggest checking headlines just to offer up-to-date topics, and making sure to ask questions about your date, rather than revealing much about yourself. Suggestions for internet dating are included in a separate chapter, and later chapters go into specific questions that cover personal background and relationship history in great detail.

Great reality check! October 3, 2008
I was apprehensive when my sister gave me this book after my divorce. However, right after the first few pages I realized that this book would bring me back to the real world of singles. I am happy to report that the book is not only very helpfull for those who need to strengthen their self esteem, but also makes you laugh about the fairy tale ideas that most women hear as girls and believed to be true. Dr Phil takes you in a loving journey into your own soul and gives you good pointers on what to look for in a romantic partner in a more realistic and fun way.

Why didn't Dr. Phil "FIX" his first wife?? May 26, 2008
This is ludicrous. Dr. Phil was married before but they divorced - he didn't fix her. (as if there were such a thing)

His popularity has gone to his head. I still watch the show if the topic is interesting but WHY does he think we all love Robin? I avoid the shows with her completely. I was married to an Army Officer for over 30 years but it didn't make me qualified to lead troops into battle. He thinks we want her opinion on everything. I don't!

You cannot post any differing opinion on his website, that's too controlled!

Say what you will about Dr.Phil, but he does know his stuff. Also, he's got a great prespective on dating and in this book, it shows. I learned a lot and was happy to read this book, which has helped me in numerous ways. I also liked and would suggest another dating book which, along with "Love Smart" has also helped me: Dating Sense: The Practical Way to Meet, Date and Marry the Right Person .
